Safe Room

EMA encourages people who live in hazard-prone areas to make sure they have a safe place to go…with time to get there. A residential safe room is designed to provide near absolute protection to you and your family from the high winds and from associated flying debris. Home windstorm shelters, or safe rooms, can provide protection against winds of up to 250 mph and against projectiles at 100 mph.

Homeowners who receive a disaster-assistance loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration to repair or rebuild a damaged or destroyed home may use some of the loan to construct a safe room. The Small Business Association can also increase the approved disaster loan by up to 20% to cover the cost of adding a safe room. Cost of a safe room can widely vary from $10,000 to $100,000.
